INSURANCE FOR PRIVATE HIRE DRIVERS

Drive for Uber, Bolt
or a local operator?

Your insurance needs to match the passenger work you do. Tell our team which apps and private hire operators you drive for.

Driving for apps

Local operator work

Airport transfers

Chauffeur work

Working across different platforms, carrying passengers and making deliveries can involve different insurance requirements. We’ll check the intended use with the insurer.

Mention of an operator does not imply a partnership or approval. For London Uber work, insurer acceptance and document integration must be checked.

Explore your requirements

More ways to work in private hire

Tell us about all your passenger work, whether through Uber, Bolt, FREENOW or a local operator. The insurer must accept the activities and each operator may have its own document requirements. References to platforms do not imply a partnership.

01

London private hire

For a London driver or vehicle licence, explore the PCO page and have your licensing information ready.

02

Electric and hybrid vehicles

Explain ownership, value, charging arrangements and the replacement vehicle you would need after an insured incident. Battery, charging cable and recovery benefits need checking.

03

A growing operation

If you have several vehicles or rent vehicles to drivers, describe the full business arrangement. An individual taxi policy should not be assumed to cover a fleet or rental operation.

WHY CROSSROADS

More than four decades.
Still personal.

Insurance is about your working life. We start with a conversation.

01 / THE CROSSROADS APPROACH

Independent markets. Personal attention.

We explore the options available through specialist insurance markets, based on your vehicle and the work you do.

02 / THE CROSSROADS APPROACH

People you can speak to.

Tell us what you need and ask the questions that matter to you. Our team will talk you through the available options.

03 / THE CROSSROADS APPROACH

Know where you stand.

We explain the cover, excesses and relevant terms before you decide. You can ask us about the details at every stage.

01 / YOUR LEVEL OF COVER

Compare the cover.
Choose with confidence.

Three familiar levels. We’ll explain the options available for your vehicle and work.

01 / COVER LEVEL

Third Party Only

Cover for your legal liability to other people.

Injury to other people

Included

Damage to other people’s property

Included

Fire or theft of your vehicle

Not included

Accidental damage to your vehicle

Not included

Windscreen repair or replacement

Not included

Does not insure loss or damage to your own vehicle.

02 / COVER LEVEL

Third Party, Fire & Theft

Third party liability, plus fire and theft protection.

Injury to other people

Included

Damage to other people’s property

Included

Fire or theft of your vehicle

Included

Accidental damage to your vehicle

Not included

Windscreen repair or replacement

Not normally included

Adds fire and theft cover, but not accidental damage to your vehicle.

03 / COVER LEVEL

Fully Comprehensive

Third party liability and wider protection for your vehicle.

Injury to other people

Included

Damage to other people’s property

Included

Fire or theft of your vehicle

Included

Accidental damage to your vehicle

Included

Windscreen repair or replacement

Check policy terms

Windscreen benefits, excesses and repair arrangements vary by insurer.

This is a general comparison, not a policy summary. Availability and benefits depend on the insurer. The policy wording and certificate set out the actual cover and permitted use.

Not sure which level to choose?

We’ll explain the available cover and excesses before you decide.

02 / YOUR TIMEFRAME

A week.
A few months.
The year ahead.

We arrange 7-day, 30-day, 90-day and annual policies, subject to eligibility and insurer availability.

EXPLORE POLICY LENGTHS

7

DAYS

A week of cover

Our seven-day taxi enquiries are for third party only cover. Tell us the dates and work you need insured; eligibility must be checked.

30

DAYS

A month at a time

Explore a 30-day policy for a shorter period of work. Check the start and end dates and arrangements for further cover.

90

DAYS

A longer short-term option

A 90-day policy may suit a defined period of work. We’ll explain the available cover and cancellation terms.

12

MONTHS

Cover for the year ahead

An annual policy provides a 12-month period of cover. Ask about the payment options available for your circumstances.

Short-term cover and monthly instalments on an annual policy are different arrangements. Not all options are available for every risk.

03 / OPTIONAL EXTRAS

Extra support.
Where it matters.

Add protection for the things your main motor policy may not cover.

01 / 06

Motor Legal Cover

Help with legal costs to recover uninsured losses after a non-fault accident, such as your excess or loss of earnings.

What we’ll help you check

  • Which uninsured losses can be pursued?
  • What conditions apply before legal costs are authorised?
  • How do I report an incident and request assistance?

02 / 06

Motor Breakdown

Roadside help and recovery if your vehicle breaks down. Home assistance and other benefits depend on the cover selected.

What we’ll help you check

  • Is my licensed taxi or private hire vehicle eligible?
  • Which roadside, recovery and home-assistance services are included?
  • What should I do if the vehicle breaks down?

03 / 06

Guaranteed Vehicle Hire

Access to a replacement licensed vehicle following an insured incident while yours is repaired or replaced, subject to eligibility and hire limits.

What we’ll help you check

  • Which incidents qualify for a replacement licensed vehicle?
  • How long is hire available and what are the eligibility conditions?
  • What happens if my own vehicle cannot be repaired?

04 / 06

Motor Excess Protection

Reimbursement of an eligible motor policy excess after your motor insurance claim is settled, up to the protection limit.

What we’ll help you check

  • Which excess payments are eligible for reimbursement?
  • What limit applies and when can I claim?
  • Which settlement documents will I need?

05 / 06

Motor Public Liability

Cover for certain liability claims from members of the public arising from insured business activities. Ask us how this works alongside your motor policy.

What we’ll help you check

  • Which business activities does the policy cover?
  • How does it work alongside my motor insurance?
  • What limits and exclusions apply?

06 / 06

Key Protection

Help with the cost of lost, stolen or accidentally damaged vehicle keys, including eligible replacement keys and locks.

What we’ll help you check

  • Which keys and locks are covered?
  • What limit and claim conditions apply?
  • How do I arrange an eligible replacement?

Select an option to explore it. Optional covers are subject to availability, limits, exclusions and policy terms. We can provide the full wording before you decide.

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Your questions
answered.

From your first private hire policy to a change of vehicle, start here.

Understanding your cover

Private hire journeys are pre-booked. Public hire taxis may also use ranks or accept street hails where licensed. Tell us which work you do so the policy can be checked against it.

PCO insurance is a commonly used description for London private hire insurance. The description alone does not establish suitability: your licensed use, documents and policy terms need checking.

Do not assume personal car insurance or ordinary business use covers paid passenger work. Tell us about hire and reward use before arranging insurance.

Check the permitted uses on your certificate. Personal use, commuting and who may drive depend on the policy; we can explain the wording available to you.

It is not automatic. Ask about licensed replacement vehicles, the events covered, eligibility and time limits. A standard courtesy car may not be suitable for your passenger work.

Motor legal cover, breakdown, guaranteed vehicle hire, motor excess protection, motor public liability and key protection. We’ll explain availability, benefits and exclusions before you decide.

No. Comprehensive describes the level of motor cover. Breakdown, excess protection or a replacement licensed vehicle may require separate cover. Check what is included rather than relying on the policy name.

Your vehicle and driving work

Tell us which platforms you use. We need to check available policies against your work and the platform’s requirements. Acceptance by an insurer does not automatically mean acceptance by an app.

Uber currently requires London drivers to use an accepted insurance provider integrated with Instadoc. Ask us to check this before proceeding. Read Uber’s current requirements.

Declare every operator and all passenger or delivery work. Delivery cover should not be assumed to be included. We can ask about the uses permitted by the available policy.

Tell us the model and whether you own, lease or rent it. Acceptance depends on the insurer and arrangement. We also need to know who is responsible for insuring the vehicle.

Yes, you can send an enquiry. Tell us your experience and history accurately. The available insurers’ criteria determine whether a quote is possible; acceptance is not guaranteed.

Tell us what evidence you have and when it was earned. Acceptance or an introductory discount depends on the insurer. Do not assume private car discount transfers automatically.

Quotes, policy lengths and payments

Your vehicle registration, licence details, licensing authority, operators, expected mileage, claims and convictions. If available, have your renewal information and no-claims evidence ready too.

No. It requests contact from our team. Cover must be arranged and confirmed, with the required information and payment arrangements completed, before you rely on it.

Call 020 8374 9331, Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm, or send a quote enquiry. Our address is 133 Tottenham Lane, Crouch End, London, N8 9BJ.

We arrange 7-day, 30-day, 90-day and annual cover, subject to insurer availability and eligibility. Tell us your dates and work so we can explore the options.

No. Instalments may spread the cost of an annual policy, with a finance agreement and possible interest or charges. A 30-day policy is a shorter period of insurance. Ask us to explain the arrangements available.

Policy changes and cancellation

Contact us before making the change. Acceptance, any additional premium and fees depend on the policy. Check that the replacement vehicle is covered before driving it.

Contact us for the applicable cancellation terms. Refunds, fees and any finance balance depend on the contract, time on cover and claims position. Do not assume unused days will be refunded.
